The Sentinel by jViks The Sentinel by jViks
Easter island is a really extraordinary place ... most of the islands plants have disappeared, the old civilization originally inhabiting the island disappeared, but their legacy, the moai statues remain... And day by day, they are watching what their creators couldn't.
My first attempt on photographing the milky way - please tell me what you think about the PP and color balance, they are something I'm not entirely sure when it comes to night photos...

Stunning work. And a magical place to visit, shame the native population used all the timber on the island and let the soil erode so the crops stopped growing.

Perhaps dodge The Sentinel a bit so it's slightly easier to see. Though, not too much to remove the mysteriousness of it.

I think this is a stunning photo of the milky way!! The colours and everything look great, and the foreground subject totally adds to the awesomeness... especially since it's a moai statue!
I agree with the comment below; this needs a DD!!

Light painting would do just fine here for the statue...

Actually, the statue is lit by 2 torches, it was just a black silhouette without it, but it was my first attempt on doing that, so I failed a bit ... I wanted to light up the pedestal and whole statue, but I picked up some light in the grass and not all of the pedestal was lit :/ It looked fine on the LCD, but no so on monitor...:S

Looks pretty awesome to me :)
Can I ask what PP you actually did to the image? Dying to get night shots, but am in the same 'not sure' boat lol.

Thanks a lot!

for the PP:
In LR, I just did basic exposure correction, noise reduction and profile correction for the lens.

Then, in PS, I did the following
- 3 contrast curves:
1. for the whole photo, very strong contrast curve
2. for the milky way only, again pretty strong contrast curve
3. for the whole photo, lightening the upper-midtones and highlights

- 5 color curves:
1-3. color curves to negate light pollution from a few houses nearby
4. color curve for overall WB correction
5. color curve for the milky way only, making it slightly cooler

- Hue/Saturation, saturation bumped up by 15 points

- One more curve to lighten the whole image

Hope it is understandable...
